Season Top Ten

What are your favorite autumn activities?
Here is a short list of things we like to do!

Take a tractor Ride at Blue Hill Orchards!

APPLES are in season!  What's fresher and better than picking your own fruit and visiting a CT farm?  Find a pick your own apple farm near you!  Also, have some fun at Glastonbury's Apple Harvest Festival on October 16, 17, & 18.

Visit a CT Corn Maze! We've made a quick link on buyctgrown.com to make it even easier to find a corn maze near you. Some of our favorites include Scantic Valley Farm in Somers, Ekonk Hill in Sterling and Fort Hills Farm in Thompson.

It's not fall in CT if pumpkins aren't included. Whether you eat them, carve them, decorate them or weigh them! Decorate your home or office with CT grown items which can include mums, asters, pumpkins, gourds, winter squash, ornamental corn, corn stalks! Everything seasonal and festive you need is grown right here in CT!

Celebrate fall by taking a tractor ride at Blue Hill Orchard in Wallingford.  The ride is 45 minutes long with wonderful panoramic views of Wallingford!

Brussel Sprouts! Did you know that brussel sprouts actually are sweeter tasting after a frost? Tis the season that farmers are going to start harvesting brussel sprouts! Be on the look out for full stalks of these green buds at your farmers market or retail stand.

Brew your own hard cider! Stop by Beardsley's Cider Mill for a starter kit and the 'raw' ingredients (the link has a list of some of their suggested varietals for cider making)...make sure to buy some extra apples to snack on for the ride home (and for making into apple crisp)! There is no such thing as too many apples, or is there?

Grow your own! Fall is exactly the time to get your garlic and bulbs in the ground. Visit your local farmers market or check out buyctgrown for an extensive list of farmers in CT that grow/sell garlic.

Gardening to-do! This is the time to start adding compost to your garden in preparation for the next growing season. Collins Powder Hill Farm is one of the CT dairy farms that have both bagged and bulk compost available for sale!

Soups, chilis and stews! Capture the true flavors of fall with CT harvested root vegetables, onions, potatoes and meats using one of these seasonal recipes.

Pledge and track all autumn long! With apples, ciders, wines, dairy, eggs, meats, hardy greens, winter squash, pumpkins, and more, it's easy to keep 'on track' with the CT 10% Campaign. Use buyCTgrown to search for specific ingredients or businesess that are serving locally sourced meals through the autumnal season!
